As I mentioned after our last Sam’s Club Membership / Gift Card giveaway, we still have quite a few memberships left to give out. All of a sudden I’m in a bit more of a rush to give them out – for one good reason.
Starting tomorrow and continuing through November and December, the Wife and I are participating in some very cool Sam’s Club Holiday campaigns and each one includes gift-card giveaways (and multiple cards per giveaway). All in all, between now and Christmas, we will be giving away about $1,500 worth of Sam’s Club gift cards. Not too bad right? This doesn’t even include all of the other giveaways that the Wife has been working hard to put together with many of the the other companies we have worked with. You’ll be hearing a lot more about all of these campaigns very soon.
Today, I’m giving away four Sam’s Club Advantage Plus Memberships / Gift-Cards. Like I’ve said many times before, these memberships are each worth $100 and if you already have a membership, you can use this as a gift-card. You can find all of the details in the official rules below. We’ve had a great response with these giveaways so far and we’re glad to be able to keep them going.
For one reason or another, I always feel obligated to have a “theme” for the giveaway. I like to see what people have to say when we ask them to come up with some sort of creative comment. It beats the heck out of a few hundred comments that say “Enter me.”
Since we’re about to kick-off our holiday campaigns, I thought it would be interesting to have a theme about gifts. Namely, what was the best Christmas, Hanukkah or <insert name of preferred gift-giving holiday here> present that you’ve ever received? So when you leave your main comment, that will serve as your entry to the contest, we’d really like to hear about your favorite gift. To get you going, I’ll tell you about mine.
While I was growing up, “Santa” took pretty damn good care of my little brother, sister and I. It would be hard to think of a Christmas where we didn’t get pretty much everything we asked for. No question about it, we were extremely lucky (and probably took that good fortune completely for granted). But because of that, it would be hard to pick a “favorite” childhood gift, so I have to move to something more recent. In this case, what made the gift “great” wasn’t so much the object itself (although it is awesome), but instead it was the thought that the Wife put into it.
Shortly after I graduated from college and started my first “real” job, I purchased a pretty expensive item. It was a Takamine EF341SC
acoustic/electric guitar. This guitar was my prized possession, not only because it was the first “big” thing I bought myself, but also because I loved playing it. The problem was that about a year after I bought it, I went through a pretty rough few months (that I may discuss in a later post that I would title something like “How to Avoid Letting a Girlfriend/Breakup Mess Up Your Whole Damn Life”). Needless to say, I somehow ended up leaving my job and ending up broke in Chicago living with some friends from college. As a result, my Dad sold my Takamine so I could have money to pay for rent.
Early on in our relationship, the Wife must have noticed how much I missed that guitar because I talked about it all the time and how annoyed I was that I let myself get into a situation where I had to sell it. As a result, it was a real surprise when during our first Christmas together I opened up a rather large and unwieldy box to discover an absolutely identical, Takamine EF341SC. I couldn’t possibly have been more surprised. I didn’t realize she had been paying attention when I talked about it so it really blew me away that she figured out the model (without me ever actually mentioning it) and managed to find a mint condition model that was made at about the same time as my original.
I think about how thoughtful that was every time I play the guitar (which I wish was more these days). I know one thing – the new guitar is
more of a prized possession than the old one ever was, because of all the effort she put into finding it. No matter what happens in my life, there is no way in hell that thing is ever being sold again. I’ve already started teaching Anna to play her own guitar and when I happen to kick-the-bucket someday, the Takamine will be hers (along with a bunch of other cool stuff – like our credit card debt).
So there you go. Best present I’ve ever received. What’s your story? To make it worth your while to be creative about it, three of the memberships will be given out using the usual random comment method. The fourth winner will be chosen by me, based on what I think was the best “present receiving” story. This will be completely subjective and totally at my discretion. Whatever I think is the coolest story will win. Simple as that.
Good luck & keep an eye out for all of the other contests that we’ll have starting up over the next week.
Official Rules:
1. You must already be, or become a subscriber to this site in order to participate in this contest.
2. To enter, leave a comment describing the best holiday present you’ve ever received. You don’t necessarily have to be honest (how will I ever find out if the present was real or not), but you do have to be creative – the best story will win a membership.
3. Four winners will receive a Sam’s Club Advantage Plus – Gift of Membership card. If you already have a Sam’s Club membership, you can use the remaining balance of the card as a standard Sam’s Club gift card.
4. The first three winners will be selected using random.org, based on the number of your comment.
5. The fourth winner will be chosen by me based on the entry that I consider the best and most creative.
6. This contest will end at 10pm on Friday, November 13th 2009.
7. Winners will be notified by email and posted to this site. Winners will have 48 hours from the time of notification to claim their prize. If the prize is not claimed within that time, another winner will be chosen.
8. Each comment represents a single entry. Those entitled to multiple entries for performing “extra credit” must add a comment for each entry.
9. You must answer the question regarding the “present” topic in order to participate. You don’t have to write a long paragraph, a simple sentence will do. If you ignore this request and comment with “Cool contest, enter me”, your comment will be deleted.
Extra Credit:
1. Follow me using the Google Friend Connect widget – 1 extra entry
2. Follow on Twitter and Tweet about this contest – 1 extra entry per day (include link to Tweet in your comment)
3. Blog about this contest – 3 extra entries (include a link to the post in your comment)
4. Enter any of the giveaways in progress on www.theartofbeingmom.com – 3 extra entries (include name of contest and your comment # )
5. Post a comment on any of the other posts on this site (from the past month) – 1 extra entry per post (leave post name and comment #)
(remember, you have to leave a comment for EACH ENTRY when you do extra credit. We pick winners based on a drawing using the comment number. If you put 5 entries into a single comment, you defeat the whole purpose of the extra credit, since you aren’t increasing your chances of winning. No, I am not going to go through each entry and make sure that you’ve entered correctly, that is up to you.)

The best gift I ever received, even though I did not know it at the time, was a regift from my Mom. She had been given 2 stuffed bears for her Birthday by her coworkers. One was an “angel” bear. She thought they were cute but put them away, she didn’t feel right having stuffed bears as a 60-something year old woman. A year later she gave me my Christmas gifts, one was a gift basket with all girlie stuff. The centerpiece was the two bears. She wanted them to go to someone who would display them. I didn’t realize how much they would mean to me until I lost Mom two years later, now every time I look at those bears, I know Mom is watching over me and I smile.(yes, this is a real gift)

The best gift I ever received was a quilt hand made by my Grandmother. The last couple of years before she passed she made quilts by hand for all the grandchildren and great grandchildren (that’s a lot of quilts). They are each unique. It is amazing she did it all without a sewing machine. She fell and broke her hip, not long after finishing the last quilt, and didn’t recover from that. Every time I look at the quilt I remember all the good times and it will be a gift that can be passed down for generations to come.

The best gift I had ever received for the holiday was my son. He was born on New Years Eve. He was my second child. My first was induced so I had no clue if I was really in labor or not with him. I had waken up from a nap about 12 noon with these terrible cramps and i didn’t want to inconvenience any one, especially my ex husband who was at work. I called my mom and told her. I said to my mom that I was having these terrible pains but wasn’t sure if they were just false labor pains. My mom said Lisa, if you’re holding onto the walls with pain and you’re 4 minutes apart you’re in labor. Anyway, I went to the hospital and I was in pain for a few hours and they were about to give me something for the pain and my ex said to them as they had the needle about to go in me……how do you know she won’t go from 4 to 8 centimeters like the last time. The last time I waited like 8 hrs before it got to that point. I looked at my husband with such rage in my eyes when they walked out. The only thing this man ever did for me was give me 2 beautiful kids. But believe it or not within 5 minutes of him saying that it happened, I went from 4 to 8 and then a bit after that I had this beautiful but quite loud and still loud til today going to be 19 this new years eve a beautiful boy. This is the only one I had within 6 hours. He was born 6:16 that day. He was 9 lbs 11ounces. he was born with no c-section and believe it or not today he is only about 5′7″ and 156 lbs. He was the biggest kid in the nursey and they called him “The Whopper” cause he looked like he was 3 months old.

This is excellent! Very nice of your wife to do that.
So imagine my surprise when he is on his way home and then my parents show up at my house. Umm ok..Hi lol. I had no clue whey they were there and all 3 of my kids were bursting with excitement but would tell me nothing. My wonderful husband finally gets home carrying in a big birthday cake all light up. Everyone starts singing and the tears start. Then he gives me this tiny box and at this point i should have invested in the kleenex company. I had to run away for a second to try to compose myself but couldnt so I faced everyone and opened my gift. It was a beautiful necklace with the people charms of all of my 3 wonderful kids. It was so beautiful. I have worn it everyday since and absolutely love it. It was my first gift from my wonderful husband and the best.
My favorite and best present just happened last year on my birthday which is in december from my husband. We have been married for over 8 years and not once has he ever bought me a gift or jewelry. Money has been tight but a girl can dream
Thank you!

Hubby and I keep gift giving as a small component of the holidays and we decide ahead of time how many gifts we’ll give each other, so I was kind of dismayed to find an extra gift under the tree for me last year.
When I opened it, it was a hand-crafted aluminum ring that I could use to balance a brewing basket on top of an old carafe I use for making coffee.
See, the brewing basket didn’t sit on the carafe exactly right and I had burned myself a couple of times last fall when it toppled over while it was filled with hot water.
So, while I thought Hubby was in his workshop working on a gokart, he was crafting this ring for me.
The amount of time and care he put into it was just too touching, so it’s now my favorite gift ever.

My best present ever given to me was my engagement ring. It was supposed to be for Christmas. After Thanksgiving, my boyfriend (now husband) kept complaining about my earring always being out on the bathroom counter, the bar in the kitchen, on the dresser in the bedroom, everywhere. Everyday he complained and complained. And I would move them to my drawer in the bathroom. But every day I would take off a pair and lay them down. On Dec 1st, I came home from work and he announced that he would give me one of my Christmas presents early. I was just excited he had bought a Christmas present that early!! It was a big box. I opened it and it was a jewelry box. I was slightly emabrrassed, I said “Is this b/c you are tired of seeing my earring laying around the house?” He said “Yes. Check it out and make sure that’s one you’ll like and USE!” When I opened it, my ring was already sitting in the jewelry box. He got down on one knee and proposed…of course I said yes.

My best christmas present has been that my husband and kids bought me a disney collectible figurine. It was lady and the tramp which was my fav. disney movie when I was a little girl. It was my favourite gift because it was very thoughtful of them to think of this:) Thanks for the great giveaway.

Best gift we received was a used refrigerator, when hubby first got married, we had 4 kids to blend into a new family. Things were tight the first year. Our neighbor bought a new frige and sent us the older one. The one they brought was a way better model then what we had.

My best present I ever received was a homemade little table. My husband and my child (I only had one at that time) worked for a couple months (while I was at work) on a little table for me. The made it out of wood and although my husband put most of the work in it, my daughter helped him hold things and put the finishing paint drawings on it. It doesn’t look like much to other people, but to me, it’s the best present ever. They put alot of work in it and my daughter showed her artistic side. I have had it for 9 years now and it is still displayed in my living room.

The best “present receiving” for me was actually when I gave my husband a Christmas present. It was 2006, I was working since I was staying home to raise my daughter. We where really tight on money so I knew I wouldn’t be able to get my husband anything. However I found out in November that my father wanted to sell a car, he said if I could help with online ads he’d give me $300 from the sale. That day I jumped on the computer and got that sucker sold before the end of the month. I didn’t tell my husband about it. I went out and bought him a Takamine acoustic guitar with a hard case.
Here’s the part I love….
We went to my parents house on Christmas morning. A few days before I had come over and hide both presents and that morn I hid the guitar in my parents bathroom and wrapped the case. He opened the case and was pretty excited (even though it was much nicer than his beat up guitar!) but said it looked a little to big for the one he had; which I knew he would say. I pretended to get really upset saying the guy that sold it to me told me it would fit perfect. I started fake crying and ran off to my parents room. My dad who was in on it said he should give me a minute than go see if I was OK. When I husband came in the bathroom I was sitting on the edge of the tub holding his new Takamine. He was so surprised he almost started to cry. I will never forget the smile on his face that day!!

My best present ever wasn’t really the present (although it was my first very own tv!), but the way the present was given to me. I was about 13 or so and opened a box from my Dad and the box had a clue in it which led to another clue, which led to another clue, etc… HE HAD MADE A SCAVENGER HUNT FOR ME!!! It was SO much fun – I think he enjoyed watching me as much as I enjoyed doing it. Eventually, of course, I came to the actual present, which was, as I said above, my very own tv – it was my first one and I had been DYING for it. It was the best experience I had with an Xmas gift. THANKS DADDY I LOVE YOU!

One of my best holiday gifts was an Atari. Now, this was back in the day when video games were just becoming popular and when you went to video arcades and lined up your quarters to get in line to play Pac-Man. There was no way my sister & I would have asked for the Atari because my parents usually didn’t spend money on frivolous things like that. It was a total surprise and I think I burned out 2 TV sets just playing Asteroids.

The best present I ever received would be a toy car made from a slice of 2×4 and four bobbins from the inside of ribbon reels. I know it sounds dull but I grew up in a family that couldn’t make ends meet. My sister and I spent a lot of time living with our grandparents growing up because our parents were struggling to even pay the bills but I LOVED spending time with my granddad, he was everything to me. One year things were looking particularly sparse and even as my grandmother worked her job in the bow factory and my grandfather received his army pension benefits we were in a bad spot. We knew that food came first and there never failed to be food on the table especially come Christmas time when we all came together as a family but not being one to allow us to go without my grandfather had worked in his glass doored shed in the garden to put together a toy car made from scraps from his DIY about the house and my grandmothers ribbon reels to make sure that there was something special under the tree for us. The car itself didn’t last long as I towed it around the house but even as the wheels started to wobble I dragged it behind me. It must have been a pretty sad sight to see thinking about it now but I never saw myself as hard done by and that little car was the highlight of my Christmas.

The best Christmas gift I ever received was given to me by my sister last year. Both of our parents passed away some years ago and my sister became the “keeper” of the family pictures. She still lives in the area that we grew up in, while I moved 1200 miles away. Last year for Christmas, she scanned and printed copies of all the pictures and put them in a lovely album for me. What a wonderful gift! I have enjoyed looking at the pictures and reliving Christmas’ past. She also gave me a CD with all the picture on it. I am planning on making 2 more copies of all the pictures for my sons.

the best christmas present i ever received is worth more to me than gold or diamonds, when we were kids, it was a note from my brother saying he owed me a present.
but the reason i still believe in Santa is because we would write our letters to Santa and give it to my mom’s boyfriend who promised he would mail it to Santa. And on Christmas day, he’d come with exactly what we asked for, and told us Santa asked him to give it to us. And I Believe, till this day I Believe.

The best holiday present I ever received happened during our church Christmas pageant. I was a teenager, and had been chosen as the angel in the pageant. I got to wear a beautiful white robe with a halo and golden wings. A little girl in our parish who was very ill with leukemia wanted to attend the pageant so she could see the angel. Her parents bundled her up and brought her to the church. I had to stand in one spot overlooking the manger scene during the entire pageant, standing very still. I decided to focus my gaze on the little girl in the congregation the entire time. I smiled at her continuously, and her face lit up, as if she knew she would soon be in the company of real angels. That is the most blessed present I ever received – that little girl’s smile at Christmas. p.s. this really is a true story.

The best gift ever was from my older brother. I opened my present to find that the walking Doll my folks had gotten me, didn’t walk and was broke. So my Dad, who at the time was an alcoholic thought while he was bombed could fix it. He ended up breaking it to the point he brought it back up stairs the head attached to one leg. He said I made it into a rattle for you. Now I was six years old, who wanted a rattle. I tried not to cry so anyone could see, but my big brother knew.
He went to his room and got me his favorite stuffed bear, he brought it up to me. He whispered in my ear and said, “I know this isn’t the doll you were hoping for, but I hope you’ll love it for now on as much as I did.”
He gave me his favorite animal and I knew that was hard for him to do. It was the best gift I ever got.
We were pretty poor growing up and with five kids, we each only got one toy apiece at Christmas, a pair of new shoes either for church or school, new underwear if needed, and one game for the whole family to share.

I guess I got one of my favorite gifts at Christmas, when I was 15. My then boyfriend, (now husband,) gave me a really cool box set of Janis Joplin cds. It was an exciting Christmas, because it was our first together, and the set cost around $60 bucks, which was pretty pricey for me at that time, as I was working for $4.25 an hour….
I still listen to them 14 years later.

I have 2 favorites.
First, when I was about to turn 20 my grandmother past away very unexpectedly. It was devastating to me. She and I were so close. It nearly broke my heart. My birthday was days away. Imagine my surprise when the mail came. She had sent my birthday card on the day she died. The words she wrote were some of the last she spoke. She was home alone when she died and had to have placed my card in her mailbox.
It is a treasure to me.
Second, My sweet little girl (middle child) had a little jingle in her pocket. We went to the city to the mall (we didn’t do this much). She saw a Yankee Candle store and was so excited to go in. Her reason? To spend her $5 on a giftcard just for me to use.
I cried. She could’ve spent her money on herself…..but instead she wanted to bless me.
And she did.

The best present I ever got was made with a lot of love from my Dad. When I was 9 or 10 he made me a
dollhouse by hand. I saw him making it in the garage before Christmas
and he told me it was for my cousin. Imagine my shock when he gave it to me on Christmas morning. Unfortunately I did not express my gratitude to him for all of his hard work because I really wanted a new bike. I was so disappointed by his handmade gift.
What a rotten kid I was. Luckily he forgave me!!

My most memorable Christmas gift was a horse when I was about 10, but the best gift I ever received is my children. I know…that sounds really cheesy, but it is so true.
Early in our marriage we decided to try to have children. As the months wore on and each month we weren’t pregnant, I began to worry. We began seeking fertility testing after about a year of trying to conceive. In May of 1999 (on my birthday) we went in and got the results of all of our testing. The results weren’t good, we had a major issue that made it unlikely that we would be able to conceive, at least on our own without some pretty major help. I was heart broken! The next week was also Mother’s Day, a terrible day for me that year.
But much to my amazement, in the month of July I was late…and I am NEVER late…so I dug out an old pregnancy test (one that had come with an Ovulation Prediction kit…one that I assumed I would not need for a while) and decided just to check. Here I was at home on my lunch break from work, taking this pregnancy test that I was certain was negative, but decided to try any way. When that second line appeared I was in complete shock; I had thought it was impossible, at least highly improbable. I brought the test out to my husband and hands shaking, showed it to him (he worked evenings at the time so was also at home). I still remember the excitement I felt, that overwhelming feeling of gratitude. That next February we received the best gift ever, the gift of our first child (and subsequently, only daughter). Now five children later, we aren’t sure what happened to the problem we though we had, cause getting pregnant isn’t hard at all for us now…I guess be careful what you wish for right? Seriously though, they are a most amazing blessing; especially after thinking we wouldn’t have any!

The best holiday gift I ever received was getting my son back. When he was 2 months old we awoke to find blood in his mouth. After rushing him in an emergency squad, and spending hours at the hospital , we were told to go home..he was fine etc. etc. As I walked in my door the phone was ringing,he needed to go back..he had a broken rib. After 4 days in a hospital room and the fracture count rising from 1 rib to 11, I was then told I had 1 hour to be in court..I was being charged with abuse.I was escorted out by the Sheriff and not allowed to leave anything with my son,not a binky, piece of clothing ,nothing, I was not even allowed to say goodbye. He was put in foster care for about a month while we filed papers to move him with family.
Keep in mind that I had taken my son to the doctor, urgent care, and the ER over 15 times in the 2 months he had been alive because he was crying, fussy and vomiting/spitting up constantly. He had been x-rayed,had blood work, they changed his formula 7 times..all in the first 2 months.
After they took him from me,they sedated my baby and did brain scans, they took him to specialists and poked and prodded him, they only allowed me to see him for 1 hour a week, supervised by Family Services..all for NOTHING!!
When this started I submitted the delivery room pictures of my son covered in bruises, black eyes,etc..just minutes after he was born.My lawyer took these pictures to the judge which persuaded him to send my son to a bone specialist.I went to the lawyer to check on the situation and was handed a letter stating that the injuries had been caused during delivery, they were sorry,no hard feelings etc…Basically we screwed up..go get your child.
I got my son back just days before Halloween and he has been with me every since.Although this is a bit early in the season, for me it made my entire holiday just to hold my child ,to put him to sleep, and wake to his smiles.I can honestly say although money was tight(I had lost my job during this because I worked in a nursing home and was charged with abuse)I will forever say this is the best holiday I have ever had.
This is a true story that happened to me in fall of 2001.Yes my son was gone on 9/11..imagine watching that on T.V. and not knowing where your child was.who they were with, or if they were safe..and not being allowed to find out.

The best present I ever got was a motorcycle when I was four. I also got a bike that year, but I learned to ride the motorcycle first, with the training wheels off of the bike! It was pretty funny to watch and I still look at the pictures and laugh.

On my best Christmas ever, I was the happy recipient of one 35mm Fuji camera, one stereo system( don’t remeber the brand name) and Free Spirit 10-speed; not a bad haul for an eight year old.

My best Christmas ever was when I was four, and my father (Santa) made a little table and 4 charming chairs for me in his “workshop.” When I came into the livingroom Christmas morning, the table was adorned with tiny plates and tea cups, and artificial fruits and foods. He had even placed teeny utensils near the plates. It was “love” at first sight. From then on I was charmed with dinner place settings and developing recipes. Later in life, I opened a restaurant and I was asked to cater the first Western Film Festival, attended by many of the Old Western Stars. The past two years, I have won six national recipe contests, and been a finalist in two others. I have to thank my dad — may he rest in peace — for helping me develop an “eye and a taste” for the total “dining experience.”

The best gift I ever received was a ring from my boyfriend. I had been bidding on it on eBay and I got outbid. A little while later when checking it I saw that my boyfriend was the new high bidder! It was supposed to be a Christmas present and although I knew about it I still had to wait until Christmas!

The best Christmas present I ever received was my Bunn Coffeemaker. My family know not to speak to me until I have had at least one cup of coffee in the morning so they purchased me a coffeemaker that has the coffee ready in three minutes.

I’d have to say that the best Christmas present I ever received was the gift my husband (then my boyfriend) gave me: He’s a musician and wrote me a song but then went to the studio to have it professionally recorded. It was all about falling in love, etc. Less than a year later, we were engaged and now married. It said a lot about his heart and how much I really meant to hi, which is the point behind a gift, right?! (Also, I subscribe to your RSS feed.)

The best Christmas present that I ever got was 15 years ago when my husband surprised me with a dalmatian puppy. He had dressed her with this big red bow & it was love at first sight. Domino was a bit of a handful at first but it made life so much more interesting. I would lay on the floor & she would curl up on my chest & we would both fall fast asleep. She became our constant companion and was very protective of us, we loved her dearly. She blessed our lives for 12 years & even to this day I turn around thinking I’ve heard her following behind me. My thanks to you & your wife for helping us bring back these wonderful memories.

The best holiday gift I ever got was a digital camera with an additional lense. I love taking pictures and already had a perfectly good 35mm camera with lenses. However, my husband took it upon himself to buy me a digital one. The reason it was so special is because he always complained about me carrying the camera around on trips and taking so many pictures. For me, this was more than a great item he bought me, it was affirmation that he accepted and supported my growing hobby.

Ooh I remember my best present recvd as a child was a dolls pram to push my cabbage patch doll in but honestly I felt my sister’s pram was way neater so I decided I’d take a little ride IN IT….needless to say I ended up being the only one with a pram that had to be shared after that!

The best present….One weekend in October 2003 we had went to Omaha (which is 4 hours away) to do some shopping and take our 2 year old to the pumpkin patch.
We happened to stop at an antiques store that I love. While there, I found a beautiful diamond and ruby ring…and I wanted it. Back in those days we were living paycheck to paycheck (wait, not much has changed!) and really couldn’t have afforded it right then…but I didn’t care. I really, really, really wanted that ring. It’s all that I thought about, and I saved up for it. Come hell or high water, I was going to have that ring.
Well, it was sometime in November that my SIL called to tell me the ring was gone, someone must have purchased it. I was so disappointed, antique jewelry is my thing. We trudge on through Christmas, I’m still hung up on that ring…and pretty bummed. The very last gift I opened Christmas Eve, a skillet. Yeah, I was pissed. I mean, who in their right mind wants a skillet under the tree? Certainly, not me!
Then in walks my son with a wrapped present. He handed it to me and helped me open it. It was nested, box after wrapped box. Finally, 7 boxes later, I opened a ring box that contained the antique diamond and ruby ring. I burst into tears!
It’s sappy, but every bit true. I wear that beautiful ring all the time and love it even more today. My husband is not the romantic type, and whatever romantic notions he may have had went into this gift, but that’s okay. It’s my all time favorite Christmas gift.

I have one of the fondest memories of Christmas ever. I was Christmas 1969. My uncle was in the military serving in Vietnam. A few days before Christmas a box arrived. It was tattered and batter worn. I knew instantly it was from Uncle Walter. The desire to rip the box open was almost overbearing but my Mama knew it was Christmas presents from my uncle and she made us wait until Christmas morning. She didn’t wrap the box in pretty paper she simply slid it under the tree among all the other nicely wrapped gifts. On Christmas morning, before even taking time to admire the new doll and toys from Santa I wanted to open the box from my uncle. My daddy took out his knife and cut the packing tape so I would be able to open the box and when I did I began to cry. Inside the box was a little doll that was more beautiful than any doll Santa could have picked out. Also in the box was a black jumpsuit. It was embellished with various designs which included a map of Vietnam and the American Flag. On the front my name was embroidered in both English and Vietnamese. It was black and all of the designs were brightly colored. It zipped from the knee up. It was perfect. I forgot about the other gifts under the tree. It was time to get dressed and I was wearing my jumpsuit my uncle sent from Vietnam. I still have that jumpsuit and both of my daughters have worn it to have their pictures made. It was special because my uncle took time to have it made, especially for me and to make sure it arrived it time for Christmas.

The best present I have received is the year my kids(all 6) and the 5 grandkids got together and had pictures done. It was at the local WalMart and I treasure then since they are all scattered across the USA. It was also a Christmas we all had together for the first time in years. All 3 boys were out of the service and could be here.

The best present I ever got was a homemade card made by my son Dustin. He must have been about 5 or 6 at the time. He made a Christmas card out of a piece of paper and drew a Christmas tree on it with decorations, presents and a picture of our family. He even folded it in half and wrote Merry Christmas inside of it with the spelling wrong. Then he put $15 in it, (a ten dollar bill and a five dollar bill). It was so touching I just about cried. I will always keep it. I still have the money inside of it too!

The best gift I ever received was the gift of time. Time with my Grandmother. She had cancer for the 2nd time and we were told that it was only a matter of months. My Moms whole family went to my Grandmothers for Christmas in 2005. we have NEVER all been together at one time. We were able to have family pictures taken and visit with my Grandmother. At that time we didn’t know that we would be blessed with 2 more Christmas’ with her and they are all cherished memories.

The best gift I received was last year. I had a new baby in Sept. I had shown my husband a ring that I wanted with the names of all my children engraved around it. Of course he lost the info and told me it would have to wait for my birthday to get it. So imagine my surprise when in my stocking I found the very ring I was wanting. He had gotten the older girls to help look online for the site and spent a little extra to have it done by Christmas. Just the extra time and effort they took to see that I got what I wanted was as special as the gift itself.

My best gift ever was a stuffed frog.
It doesn’t sound like much but I was 10 and still very much a tomboy. I would go out in the fields near us and catch frogs and spiders. I had an amazing collection of over 100 different spiders in baby food jars. The frog came with a matching blanket and comforter that had frogs on them. To me the blanket meant that “Santa” saw me for who I was and accepted me. I kept that frog on my bed for years, long after the comforter wore out, and I felt cherished every time I saw it.

The best holiday present for me would have to be the family cookbook that we received about 4 years ago. My wife and I have been married now for about nine and a half years. I’m always saying, “I would love to have <> that my mom used to make” or that my grandma used to make, or whatever. My aunt took it upon herself to gather up a lot of these recipes and put them in plastic sleeves in a three-ring binder. Now, you have to know that some of my mom’s recipes didn’t make it in the book because there just isn’t a recipe. She just knows how to make it. Those are the ones that I try to get her to share with my wife and I so we can carry on the recipe. My wife’s aunt put together a cookbook for their family’s recipes quite a few years ago. These cookbooks keep the memories alive and keep us full. I’d have to say that many of my memories are of meals shared with family, whether it be holiday meals, Sunday meals, or just plain old nightly meals.

You know how when you’re a kid, you are only interested in toys, right? I mean, CLOTHES are not an appropriate Santa gift. TOYS TOYS TOYS!! I shudder to think of the feelings I might have inadvertently hurt by tossing aside a gift that was not a toy and therefore held no appeal for me.
One in particular I vividly remember – when I was five years old, I remember opening a present from my grandfather and finding a very cute red and white cardigan sweater. Naturally I tossed it aside and hastily grabbed the next present, looking for TOYS TOYS TOYS!!
Do you know that I cannot remember a single toy I received as a young child (nor did they survive) but to this day I still have that tiny little red and white sweater. My grandfather is no longer with us, but he will always be in my heart, and even more so when I occasionally pull out that little sweater again and hold it to my heart.

My best gift has to be my engagement ring. My husband proposed to me on the top of the War Memorial Chapel on the VA Tech campus. (Yes, you are allowed to walk on the top of it!) The day before I had picked him up for his Christmas leave from the Army. I hadn’t seen him for months. He was on a training exercise part of that time so we didn’t even talk for over a month. We had talked about getting married but I knew he didn’t have the money for ring so I was totally not expecting it.
I thought he was just taking me for a very cold walk to try the ice cream place I had told him about. We walked to campus and I saw the light on in my old dorm room that I lived in when we met and said that room had some great memories. He took that as his queue and asked if I wanted to create a life time of memories with him and pulled the ring out to propose. I was so surprised and excited. I think the tears froze to my face and the ring almost fell off due to my freezing hands but it was the best Christmas present ever. Almost 8 years and three kids later, I am still saying yes to creating a life time of memories with him!

The best Christmas gift I ever got was a cassette tape recorder when I was 12. It seems so trivial now, with today’s technology long ago surpassing that, but I remember how I longed for that machine and when I got it I would sit for hours listening to the radio to hit that “record” button when I heard the first notes of my favorite songs, so I could record all my favorite tunes. Funny, way back then I remember daydreaming of being able to put together an “album” of all my favorite music, and now downloading and burning our favorite tunes to CD is so simple. Oh, how the times have changed.

My best Christmas is yet to come – but I’ll be able to experience it THIS YEAR – and winning this gift card would make it EVEN BETTER!! My husband has been away for 20 months (military) only to return the first of October. In the meantime, we’ve gone about our lives and days without him, but we…my four year old included TRULY missed his daddy. He was two when my husband left and since, he has grown from a baby into a little boy. The joy of Christmas lights up his eyes and warms my heart and I am truly excited to be able to share that with my husband this year…as a family. We WILL have the best Christmas ever…and we’ll be all together…again!!!

When I learned that I was pregnant for my now 2 1/2 year old son, I was not sure what to think. I was happy, but I also knew that things just got much harder. The father was or at least acted less than thrilled. I knew why, he had just finished signing the divorce papers and already had 4 children. I was 20, he was 38. We were already in a sticky situation, and it just got stickier. We decided that we where going to stay together and we would work things out as they came at us. When the time came to go for the ultrasound where we could hear the babies heartbeat, he went with me. And he cried. Cried like a baby. I was touched and knew that he obviously cared more than he let on. But it was Christmas day, when we were opening gifts that I really knew he cared and wanted to have this baby. He had me open a card from him, and inside was two gift cards to Babies R Us.I know that it sounds really ridiculous to say that they are my favorite gifts that I have ever received, but it’s true. It isn’t about the money. He went to the stores to buy me something for the baby, but was not sure what to get because it has been 11 years since he had a newborn, and we were not sure if we were having a boy or girl. I cried hysterically when I opened them. I knew then, that he wanted to be with me for sure, and that having this baby was going to be a good thing for us. We went to the after Christmas sales together and got tons of stuff for our little boy. It was something we could do together and we still do. I am happy to say, that my son is a Daddy’s boy through and through. I’m not jealous and I would not have it any other way. So anyway…yeah for gift cards!!!
(PS…this is a true story!)

The best present was when my fiance took me back to him home in New Hampshire then whisked me off to New York and proposed to me at Rockefeller center. I thought I was getting a shopping spree for Christmas but I really got was engaged. That was eight years ago. Im a subscriber too!

My best gift was a few print off copies from an ultrasound. 6 years ago I was given an ultrasound on Christmas eve. It was the best gift ever because I got to see a little bean growing and thriving in me. Ordinarily its always a great thing but it was extra special that time. One year earlier on Christmas eve I was about 6 weeks pregnant and came to realize that I might be miscarrying. I had never ever thought I would miscarry. I was not well informed on miscarriages and had already had 2 perfect pregnancies I just thought it would never happen to me. The 2 weeks to follow were horrible as I waited and did indeed miscarry. It was physically and emotionally a horrific experience. I had a really really hard time accepting and adjusting to the fact of what had happened. When I did become pregnant again some months later I was in constant worry about something going wrong. Even once they could find the heartbeat I still worried so much. My midwife decided to give me an ultrasound before the holidays to ease my mind and it did. Months later I gave birth to a beautiful boy who is just a constant joy.

no doubt this is going to seem strange to some of you, but THE BEST GIFT I EVER RECEIVED was the outcome of a gift that I gave to each of my 3 daughters for Christmas a few years ago.
I am a holiday fanatic…love the lights, the decorations, the baking, the wrapping–and the movies! Ever since it first came out, “A Christmas Story” has always been one of my favorite movies to watch every December. and every year, like the one before, one of my girls would make the comment that they wished they could get a “cool” present like the bunny suit that Ralphie got from his aunt Clara……it sort of became a tradition to hear them saying that each year! Anyway, three years ago I was feeling somewhat sad that all 3 of my girls were going to be in college and growing into young women, and like a lot of moms, I started getting emotional at the thought of “losing” them for Christmas one day. On a whim, I headed off to the fabric store and for several weeks before Christmas I surrounded myself in pink fur and white bunny tails while the girls were out of the house.
In our home, we have a tradition of opening gifts to one another on Christmas eve, and Santa brings the other stuff for Christmas morning, so on that Christmas eve, we had our usual neighborhood gathering, and when it was finally just my husband, the girls and me, we had our exchange. After the gifts were opened and we were enjoying the company of one another, I approached my girls and told them to each go to her bedroom as I had a little something special for them that I didn’t want them to open in front of dad. Needless to say, they each imagined a Victoria’s Secret or Bath&Body bag on their bed. As I heard each door close and the rips being made into the plain brown grocery bags on their bed, I hurried to get the camera~~~~~the out-and-out laughter that was heard when each girl opened her bag was priceless! Needless to say, within minutes each girls door was opened and out came three “bunnies” hopping down the hallway. And the funny thing is–the movie was playing on the tv and it was exaxtly at the part where Ralphie comes walking down the steps looking line “a pink nightmare”.
It probably doesn’t sound much like a great gift that was received….but to me it was, and always will be because it brought SO much fun and laughter to our Christmas that year–and ever since. I have priceless photos of all three of my girls–and we’re talking college-age girls, in those outfits–big Ralphie glasses and all, standing by the tree, and of their boyfriends wearing them the next day…and of several other family and friends sporting them that holiday season. and they’ve been worn to several costume parties by different people and shown off to many!
So the best gift I ever got—it was the gift of a memory that will live on for a lot of us, and one that will be talked about for many Christmases to come….because after all, that’s what it’s all about~celebrating the moments that make us family, friends, neighbors and people who care about one another.
A gift of a such a wonderful memory was not only given to me that day, but to the many people who have shared in that Christmas with all of us.
….now off to tell your wife’s site what gift I want!

The best holiday gift I ever received was a Mother’s ring from my kids.
My jewelry collection consisted of only my wedding ring. The only other piece I wanted was a Mother’s ring.
I began saving a few dollars here and there while tearing pages out of magazines, bookmarking sites and putting them on wish lists at several stores….not that they would still be in stock when the day came I ever saved enough money but I kept looking. I was not particular except that it was to be small and inexpensive.
What I didn’t know is my daughter ran across my portfolio of torn out magazine pages I accidentally left out on my desk and talked to her siblings about the three of them going in together to get me one for Christmas. The kids pooled their money and for Christmas in 1998, I was given a beautiful, small, 10k gold, 3 stone Mother’s ring. It has never left my finger except for 2 surgeries (I put up a good fight to keep it on but the doctor’s won that argument both times).

Best gift memory…
The first Christmas after my daughter was born, my husband’s granmother gifted us, well my daughter actually, with what ended up being the last quilt she ever made. It is simple amazing what quilters can do with thread & material. The quilt is amazing not just because it is gorgeous & girly, but also because she worked so hard to make it for her great grandchild.
Grandma is still with us physically, but sadly her mind isn’t working so well. She has forgotten how to do many things, like quilting and cooking anything other than sheet cakes – she still makes one mean cake – and it is sad to know all that skill is dormant now. We’ve made sure to tell our daughter how quilts are made & how her great grandma made it especially for her as soon as it was known she was going to be a girl. She says she wants to pass it on to her daughter one day.
Have a great weekend & thanks!
Lynn

The best Christmas gift I ever received was a top of the line sewing machine from my husband. In the more than 40 years since I got it, I have gone through 3 sewing machine heads (once, one repairman just shook his head and told me to pension the poor thing off since it had been worked to death!), but the cabinet is still with me and still in use. It’s not quite as shiny and beautiful as it used to be, but that is not what counts–it is the thought that went into the gift to begin with!

the best present I have ever received was…well, let me explain first that we have 5 boys 18 down to 8 in our household and it is overwhelming at times. My husband surprised me as a gift, a 6 month house cleaning subscription to do just my bathrooms. If you have boys or have ever been around boys bathrooms for any period of time, you would know what an amazing and wonderful gift this was. I hope he gives it to me again this year, I just don’t understand how they can’t hit that target! LOL!!

Okay when I first moved in with my hubby his stove worked but the oven didn’t. He never cooked so he never had it fixed. I, of course, complained to no avail. Well I wanted to make Thanksgiving dinner but wasn’t going to be able to do so. So he said we would go over to his friend’s house. Well a few days before Thanksgiving the doorbell rang and it was a delivery man with a new fancy stove. Now that might not sound romantic but it was such a great gift for me since I wanted to make our First Thanksgiving together. It was very sweet.

The best Christmas present I ever got was an engagement ring from my husband. He wanted to surprise me, so he had the brilliant idea of telling me he wasn’t ready for marriage, so I’d be “surprised” when I opened the ring. Instead I was upset by what he said, and I started crying and it practically ruined Christmas. He ended up just kind of throwing the box at me and muttering that he wasn’t serious about not being ready. It wasn’t exactly the romantic proposal he envisioned, but it was still my best Christmas present ever.

When I was 16, my dad was seriously injured in a work accident and was out if work for 16 months with very few benefits. I used my part time job at a discount house to buy presents and make Xmas for my family. Although I did the giving, I got the best gift which was the joy of giving at an early enough age that I could reappreciate it all through my life.
The other best gift I got was a set of china(!) dishes -service for 4 – for my doll tea parties from my favorite aunt when I was about 7. She said I was a big girl and would know how to take care of them. I felt like a million bucks with that gift.

For this anecdote, I’ll have to take you back to 1994. I was nine years old and the holiday season had just begun. My favorite thing to do after school was to sit down in front of the TV and watch Home Alone. I LOVED the humor of the movie, the Christmas lights and decorations, and most importantly, the snow. Living in southern California, the closest thing to snow I ever got to see was hail. So, I would get lost in that movie as often as I could. I couldn’t imagine living anywhere else more beautiful. Being a quiet, introverted child, I never learned how to express my wants or needs. When I was asked what I wanted for Christmas, I never knew what to say. I didn’t feel like I wanted anything. Don’t get me wrong, I always liked whatever my mom was able to give me, but I never had a special connection with any one gift. That year, one of my uncles was staying over at our house. I can hardly picture his face now, but I remember him trying to get me to confess what I wanted for Christmas that year. I would just shrug my shoulders and continue watching my movie. How could I tell him, If I didn’t know myself? As the days went by we set up our Christmas tree with the nativity set underneath it. And then eventually, school was no longer in session, so we would stay indoors most of the time due to the rainy weather. One evening, my uncle asked me to go with him to the store to buy something he needed. So I went. I noticed that we bypassed the stores we commonly went to, but I didn’t say anything. He drove and drove and drove and I just stared out of the window at the new scenery that met my eyes. I can’t remember how long I had been watching that white stuff covering the road and houses we passed by; but eventually, It hit me. I couldn’t believe it. The houses were huge and amazingly decorated. The pine trees were gigantic. And the snow was magical. At least in my eyes. I couldn’t wipe the goofy smile off my face throughout the whole ride back home. To be in that place for that one hour was the best Christmas present I’ve ever received. And If you’re wondering what material presents I got that year, you’re going to have to keep wondering, because I frankly can’t remember.

We always celebrate Christmas at my mother’s house. Every year after my husband and children open presents at home, we drive to my mother’s house for brunch. Money is always tight but we somehow manage to buy each other something small, but last year we decided to forgo presents for each other and just concentrate on the kids.
My mother always buys each of us something small to open on Christmas morning. She passed out boxes to everyone in the family and I watched everyone opening their gifts. Suddenly my mother noticed I had nothing to open and made a big show of looking under the tree for my present. She came out with a small box wrapped in gold paper. When I opened it, I found an old cardboard check box and 5 little potatoes with a note that read “This is just small potatoes, your real present is in the garage”.
Unknown to me, my husband, my mother and all my siblings had chipped in and bought me a beautiful Lane cedar chest, something I had always dreamed about owning but figured it was just not going to be a possibility until the kids got older.
I think what really made it special was my entire family chipping in to buy it. I wanted the cedar chest as a “family” heirloom and it makes it even more special that my entire family made it happen.

The best gift I have received was a 1898 silver dollar. It was my father’s and was given to him by my grandfather when he enlisted in the army, December 9th, 1941. He carried it with him all through the war and he gave it to me when I was ten. I have carried it with me everyday since then. I lost my dad six months after he gave it to me due to an accident where he worked. I can’t help but remember him everytime I feel it in my wallet.

The best present I ever got was my dog, Keiko. I begged my mom for a puppy and wrote a letter about why I should get a dog of my own. She finally gave in and we went to a farm to see some puppies. One of them dashed out the door when we entered the house. So we looked at all the other puppies and I wanted the one with the spot on his back. Finally the puppy that ran out the door came back and my mom convinced me that that was our puppy. She was right. Keiko and I have been together for 15 years now. In fact, she is sleeping at my feet right now. I wouldn’t trade her for anything.

Ok, I had long hair, he had a watch…wait a minute, that MAY have been done before! Seriously, on 12/20/82 my Dr looked at me and said “Hey, you don’t want to be in the hospital on Christmas and I don’t want to be here either…let’s have this baby!” So the next day, I was induced and had our first child, a son who was brought in by the nurse to me on Christmas eve as we were going home in a huge red stocking. We hang that stocking every year!

The best present I received was my first pet – a kitten. I’ve been an animal lover ever since. ‘Yellow Kitty’ (yes, we are hillbillies) started a great tradition of co-existence with all types of pets.

About 20 yrs ago when I was a Senior in high school I recvd my best Christmas present ever. My parents didn’t have much money and gave my 5 siblings and I the same speech every year “Money is tight so don’t expect a big Christmas.”
Well, my Dad handed me a package Christmas morning saying “Here is your BIG gift.” (we usually would get one big gift and then some small gifts).
I tore open the package to find a 4 foot long plastic tube filled with bubble gum balls. I’m thinking, this is it?
Then the whole family started pointing to the bubble gum ball they wanted from me. To my surprise, in the middle of all of that gum was a velvet bag with a class ring in it! I had to dump the gum into a bowl to get to it.
I felt so loved and was so thankful for the work mom and dad went thru to get that for me!

When I was nine my Dad had just retired from the Military and as the holidays approached, our family was settling into our new home in Una, Tennessee. I remember my parents and five brothers sitting down to dinner on Christmas Eve that year, the air was filled with lively chatter about Santas pending visit and what we hoped to find under the Christmas tree the next morning. Midway through our meal, the mouthwatering smells of our pre-Christmas supper were replaced by the lung-choking stench of smoke. My Dad jumped from the table as smoke curled around the door that led to the garage. We fled out the kitchen window and us six little boys stood shivering in the dark and snow as we watched the flames leaping into the night sky, taking our home and all our Christmas dreams with it. After the firetrucks left the smoldering remains, the neighbors took us in and bedded us down. With only a few hours of darkness left, we were sure Santa wouldn’t be spreading the holiday cheer for us that year, our hearts were heavy as we settled in for a bit of rest.
Christmas morning dawned and there was a hot breakfast and a tree buried with gifts for all. As is turned out, Mom had hidden all our gifts at the neighbor’s house to keep them safe from prying eyes (no wonder we couldn’t find them when we’d peeked in the closets and under the bed). I don’t remember any of the gifts I tore the paper from that Christmas morning, but I do remember how blessed I felt to have my five brothers and Mom and Dad all there to share the day with me. We had lost everything we owned, but we still had what is most important, each other and love enough to overcome the nightmare and share the joy of Christmas blessings. Love, the gift that keeps on giving.

As crazy as this might sound, the best gift I ever received was a stocking full of CZ earrings, other little things that are neccesities for me, and a gift certificate for a pedicure! This stocking meant my husband understood that when I said I really didn’t want to spend any money this year I really meant it. He bought me things that I had given up purchasing for myself over the year. It was so awesome to end the year with a positive savings account rather than the overspending on gifts we all have been guilty of.

In 1983 I was engaged to the wonderful man I married. We were both very much in love with each other but absolutely broke. On Christmas Day 1983 he presented me with a most amazing gift, His Grandmother’s Wedding Ring! I knew it wasn’t actually “mine” to keep at that point it needed to be sized for me but he wanted me to know that not only was I loved by him but by his family as well. I married that wonderful man in January 1984 and have loved spending the past 25 years with him. That was my most amazing Christmas gift ever & yes, it’s all true=)

The best Christmas present I’ve ever received was when I was living in California for a short period of time. At the beginning of my junior year of high school, my mother and I left New York, dropping everything to make a life in California. We have always felt a special connection to California and just decided to move there. While there, my mother had a lot of trouble finding a job (we actually ended up having to move back to NY in the end). We were paying our rent and getting groceries with help from the local church. It obviously was getting really bad money-wise for us and we weren’t going to be able to afford presents that year. My math teacher at the time was head of a local youth religious group that got together once a week to talk about things and sometimes went on day trips to San Francisco just for fun. Well, even though it cost money to join this group, my teacher knew how much I needed the social connections at the time and let me join for free. During the month of December, every year the group would take a trip to San Francisco and have a scavenger hunt in the city. They would do things like take a photo on a trolley car, sing carols in Union Square, etc. That year, my teacher waived the fee for me and encouraged me to go. I decided to go and I am so happy I did. It really help me overcome my feelings of isolation that Christmas and remember what the holiday spirit was all about. I will never forget one of our scavenger assignments. It was to buy 3 coffees from starbucks (which are ALL over San Francisco) and give them to homeless people. Even though San Francisco is in California, it can get below 40 degrees during the evening in the winter which is pretty darn cold for a homeless person without a coat. The look on the peoples’ faces when we handed them the coffee was amazing. They were so grateful for a single cup of coffee. I felt on top of the world to be able to give this to them and this feeling was the best present in the world. Even though that Christmas was one of my hardest, it was also one of my best. That experience was the best present I have ever received.

The best gift I ever received was one that changed my life! Back when I was single, my fiancee lived in Seattle, WA. I was in NC and we were still in the planning stages as to where we’d live and when we would actually get to be together full time. Our plan was for Michael to come to NC in March to look for a job. I tried several times Christmas Day to reach Michael, but he never answered his phone. About 9 pm Christmas night, Michael called and apologized for not being available. Then there was a knock at the door and I was unsure about answering it so late. Michael told me to answer it while on the phone with him. When I opened the door, he was standing there! The best Christmas gift ever!

My best Christmas gift ever was when I was 6 years old. I was a shy scared little girl(afraid to go to bed at night.)I was so very excited to get a talking lion. When you pulled the string he said many things, including “I’ll protect you.” I took him to bed every night, and had to pull the string over and over until I heard that wonderful phrase-I’ll protect you!!

The best gift I ever received for Christmas was my son! I had been infertile for years and about 8 months before Christmas in 2003, we decided to try actively to have a baby. I started taking fertility drugs, taking my temperature and timing “doing the deed” to try to get pregnant. After doing this with no success and much disappointment for more than 6 months, we gave up trying. We even stopped “doing the deed” because timing it made it lose all of its fun. After almost two months of not being intimate, we were feeling a little frisky and finally got romantic on Christmas night. Well I guess being relaxed and not trying to get pregnant did the trick because two weeks later I found out I was pregnant! Christmas was the only time we had been together in a long time so we know my son was conceived on Christmas. He was the best Christmas gift I have ever or will ever receive!

There are so many gifts over the years that are wonderful, but the best gift is being able to share the holidays with family and friends. One special one stands out in the form of a small lenox yellow lab that was given to me one Christmas, since I had owned a yellow lab. Unfortunately, that wonderful animal is no longer with us and that small figurine reminds me of what a wonderful friend I had in that animal.

The best present wasn’t expensive but very symbolic to me. My mom wouldn’t let me wear makeup long after all the other girls were. I felt like a geek, heck I looked like a geek. A barefaced geek but a geek, nonetheless.
Then came Christmas. Barefaced was OK at home and didn’t hinder my gift opening excitement. I grabbed one box with a bewitching rattle and tore it open. The contents made me lightheaded: lipsticks, glosses, mascara, eyeliners, blushes and brushes. It was like a gift of passage, from me to my mom.

Thinking of all of the Christmas presents I have ever received is bringing back a lot of awesome memories. I have received MANY gifts over the years but none of them compare to the year when I was 7. It was Christmas Day, 1988 and also the day that my brother was born. He wasn’t due until after the New Year but being a week early wasn’t such a big deal. We were up early that morning, my older brother, parents and myself. We were eating breakfast and my mom looked at my dad and I remember her saying, I have a special gift for you. He looked at her quite puzzled, stood up and her water flooded onto the floor! His eyes lit up and he smiled a smile so big it has yet to ever be matched. My mom labored at home most of the day and my dad took her to the hospital early in the evening. My brother, Nicholas (for Saint Nick) was born shortly after they arrived at 7:00pm. I was in love the moment I laid eyes on him. I thought I was the luckiest girl in the world. At that moment had I known he would be my best friend later in life, I would have considered myself the luckiest girl in the universe. Thank you for allowing myself to think about the best Christmas present ever!!

I already subscribe. On our first Christmas as a couple, my boyfriend and I spent the day with our families and got together that night to exchange gifts. What he didn’t realize was how much my family likes their alchahol. When he picked me up, I was pretty drunk. I opened my gift, a cheap rhinestone key chain with my initial. I was too tipsy to realize this was a gag, so I went on and on about how much I loved it. About an hour later, he asked me if I wanted my real gift, a very nice necklace.

My best holiday gift was at age 8. My house burned down on dec 5th so christmas was pretty screwed. I wrote a letter to santa asking for basic stuff that we needed. I didn’t believe in santa but I kinda figured – why not? Anyway, for christmas my brother sister and I all recieved a set of towels for ourselves and other new bathroom stuff. I was pretty darn thankful.

My best xmas gift was not that great of a gift but it was the only one the only one that was a surprise. My mom put out all our gifts under the tree when we learned about santa. My sister and I unwrapped every present carefully and rewrapped the. Christmas we just shook the boxes and went I believe it is a sweater with pink stripes. Mom was not happy but was a present she forgot to put out. It was just hot curlers but it was the eighties and big hair was in plus it was the only gift I did not open. I loved it because of the surprise!

I opened it first and nestled at the bottom was the prettiest little guy I had ever seen. I immediately named him Beau, grabbed him up and ran up to my room with him. A few hours later my Mum called me down to open the rest of my gifts. I can’t remember what they were but I did remember Beau.

I had gotten a job and started saving up so I could buy one, I was $100 away from getting one when our house was broken into. I was absolutely crushed. There was about a month left before Christmas when mom and dad started arguing about dad coming home late. I was really worried. Well on Christmas morning I woke up to find a laptop under the tree, turns out that Dad worked overtime to buy a laptop for me and Mom was in on it. My best Christmas gift ever was the one where my husband gave me a replacement engagement ring. We had been married 20 years when I lost the stone out of my original ring. One day at dinner, I glanced down at my hand and gasped! The stone was gone! I looked every where but never found it. I had to put the ring away and stop wearing it. For Christmas that year, my husband took the ring and had a new diamond put in it. I cried when I opened the box!

My oldest daughter, who had her first job at the time, got me a little shih-tzu since one of the things I missed most was cuddling with my dogs (they were too big and any movement on the bed/couch caused a great deal of pain).
Funniest thing is that one of the qualities Shih-tzu’s are known for is being fabulous lap dogs. Groucho (he looked JUST like Groucho Marx with the eyebrows) aka baby is the only one of my dogs who isn’t a lap dog and doesn’t like to cuddle whereas our 4 medium and large dogs all do.
Fits right in with the family, though, quirky and unique.
BTW yes, true story, I’ve blogged about Groucho often so you can verify.

For my birthday this year my hubby took the day off so that we could spend it together. After about twenty minutes of “I didn’t know what to get you this year. I hope you don’t mind if we just go shopping.” etc. he pulls out a James Avery giftbag from the closet on his way to the shower. Inside was a beautiful cross ring that I now wear every day. We has the best date day ever and I will cherish the memory always.

The best gift I ever received wasn’t so much about the gift itself, but rather the lengths my parents went to for Santa. I was about 7 I guess and still believing in Santa, but I was getting close to the age that most kids find out the real story. My parents wanted to keep the dream alive for me. I’ll never forget waking up on Christmas morning, around 5, because I couldn’t sleep. I was filled with anticipation. When I ran into the living room I couldn’t believe my eyes, Santa had left his footprints from the fireplace, to my presents. There were black shoe prints all over the place! I was in awe! Santa had been in my house and I had proof! I remember the gifts I received that year, a baby doll and some other things. The best gift though, is the memory my parents gave me. I remember that more than anything when I think of Christmas and gifts. It was the last year “Santa” came to my house. My parents showed up every year after that. lol. Thank you for helping me remember such a special time in my life.

The best gift I ever received was Barbie’s Van. It was customized and opened up and Barbie and her friends had many far-away adventures and even trips to G.I.Joe’s fort to knock over military men, cowboys and indians. Obviously they didn’t like boys back then.

My husband is at war and unable to send a gift home, but he told his mother in law what to get me. So last Christmas I didn’t expect a present from him, but there under the tree was a small box from him. he thought of me and made a way to send me a gift. It was some earrings, those earrings will be treasured forever!

I have two “best Christmas” gifts. My first favorite Christmas gift was bringing our precious miracle Tyler home from the hospital on Christmas day. I became very sick during my pregnancy. Four weeks before Tyler was due, my body was shutting down and Tyler had to be delivered early on December 23rd. At 2:00pm on Christmas Day 2003 we brought our miracle baby home! Four years later I received another wonderful Christmas gift. My husband was deployed to Afghanistan. We hadn’t heard from him in a few days. The communications had been cut off for a few days due to injuries American soldiers suffered in a roadside bomb issues. The phone rang and Tyler ran to the phone. His eyes quickly welled up with tears and he began shouting Merry Christmas Daddy! It was the sweetest gift ever. We were able to log onto the webcam and daddy was able to watch everyone open their gifts. Praise God for that wonderful Christmas! I was so blessed! Praise God Richard is home safe and sound now!

When I was young, I always wanted Vidal Sassoon Shampoo, but we couldn’t afford name brand stuff like that. My little brother bought me a bottle out of his allowance for me for Christmas. I think that was the most wonderful HEARTFELT gift I ever got.

The best present I ever received was a white plastic grand piano when I was 4. The sad part of the story is that it was during the time that Sonny and Cher was on TV. I tried to imitate Cher by lounging across the top of the piano while singing and broke the little legs off it!

The best Christmas gift I ever got was from my parents. One Christmas, when I was an adult and had just had my first child, they made me a shadowbox for Christmas. It contained the little dress I wore home from the hospital, my baby bracelet with my name (they were cute little beaded things then), and a gold plated diaper pin I’d received as a gift. I remember crying and crying because I love it so much. It’s the only gift that’s ever made me cry. My parents have both since died, and it means even more to me now when I look at it to remember how much time and effort they put into having it made. (True story….not made up for sympathy vote)
Thanks.

The best Christmas present i ever received was a plastic bus. My mother and father were having marital problems. My mother left before Christmas. She moved me and my two sisters into a two room shack. We all slept in a bed in front of a fireplace. My mother didn’t have a job. My uncle brought bread over. Christmas morning She pulled our presents out from under the bed. I kept the bus for years. Later that morning our father came over. There was a huge snowstorm that Christmas.

Wow, I have an acoustic/electric Takamine similar to yours (http://cakeblast.com/comedy/i-wanna-rock-like-twisted-sister-in-the-1980s/).
The best present I ever received was a box of assorted Godiva chocolates. It wasn’t the fact that they were so expensive, but it was the first and only time that I’ve had a lemon-cream covered chocolate that tasted good. Lemon and chocolate are two of my favorite flavors, but they do not usually mix well. It was also the first time I ever had Godiva, and I still love their chocolate.

I can’t compete with some of these stories, but I’ll tell you about one of my favorite presents from Santa, even though I almost missed it under the tree.
I was an only child, so Santa never wrapped my gifts. Everything under the tree on Christmas morning was for me. One Christmas when I was about 10 (yes, I still had Santa even at that advanced age), I was going through my presents when my mom asked me what was in this plain cardboard box between the tree and the couch.
“I don’t know. Something of yours.”
“It’s not mine,” she insisted. “It wasn’t there last night.”
I looked in the box.
“It’s some machine or something.”
“Maybe you better look closer. I think Santa left it for you.”
Certain this was not anything I would want, I pulled out the small machine and found an instruction book.
“A rock polisher!”
Which is something I had actually really wanted, I just didn’t know what it looked like.
I had a lot of fun with that rock polisher, and I still have one of the necklaces I made from one of my polished rocks.
